Question
QUESTION: I need to modify the trim around the factory stereo by glueing strips of plastic to the existing trim. This is the trim that holds the stereo, HVAC controls and various switches.

ANSWER: Hi Franck,I think we will need to take some pictures of the trim , an explanation of the kind of modifications you plan to execute and the objetives you intent to achieve. I assume the year model does not help us much in the plastic identification, although I think is 100% sure is made of <ABS>. Please send this info to my mail by mentioning the words "BMW TRIM" in the subject box. look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.

QUESTION: I've attached a photo of the trim plate. I need to add plastic tabs on the backside of the trim plate to accomodate a different BMW radio. This is a common mod for us E30 BMW guys, however, most who have done this have used epoxy. I'm thinking if this is ABS, I could simply use strips of ABS and attach them with the same adhesive plumbers use to connect ABS pipe.

Answer
You are right Franck, you need to get and cut those ABS strips. The adhesive : dissolve ABS chippings in methylene chloride or acetone until you have a sort of heavy "syrup". It will take some time to set but the result will be a strong joining mass that may add stability to the new parts. try this in a sample union first so you can get the hang of it. to start assembling the whole thing you may use some perforated metal pieces and a soldering iron as described in previous posts. good luck.thanks for the picture.

I can answer any question concerning automotive plastics repair on condition that the specific part polymer is identified. However, I can also help in the identifying process of any plastic used in automotive applications (for both body work and under-the-hood). I can't answer a question if it is based only on make or model unless full details are provided.
