Question
Hello, my Step Son has been wanting to become a airline pilot for a long time. My question is...He has a rod up his spine. He had curvature of the spine when he was younger. He has a medical exam scheduled, but I am just worried he will be let down. He was not able to join the military because of the rod. I can't find out any information about this online. I hope you can answer this for me, or point me in the direction to find some answers. I thank you in advance for you help!

Since I am just a pilot and not an Aviation Medical Examiner, I can't make an authoritative comment on his ability to obtain a first class medical. I can point you in the right direction though.

It may not be impossible, however, it will take a special application process. I suggest contacting the folks at Pilot Medical Solutions for a free consultation- http://www.leftseat.com/Orthopaedics.htm or 800-699-4457.

They have helped many pilots with health issues get their medical certificates. Pilot Medical Solutions would be able to give you insight into how limiting a factor his spinal rod may be if he has very little or no degradation or of movement. I worked with an airline pilot who is deaf in one and gets a First Class medical under a Statement of Demonstrated Ability waiver. Also, there are some pilots who have handicaps with commercial pilot certificates, although not for the airlines. (I know one who is a wheelchair aviator.) Perhaps your step son could obtain a SODA for his condition as well. Either way, I bet there is a way for him to earn his wings.

Also, as a career reference visit my careers page- http://www.pilotcareer.info

Good Luck,
Dottie
