Aviation/Flying/Landing of a commercial airline

Question
After the recent AA crash in Kingston Jamaica we had a hot topic discussion at my work place. The question was does the pilot of a commercial airline on a landing approach, completely cut the engine power minuets before touchdown?

Answer
HI Michael, the short answer is no.

Under ideal conditions the engines are put to idle power at 50 feet above the ground. Many factors can vary just when the engines are put to idle. Under normal conditions it can vary from 100 feet to actual touchdown. The variables include speed, altitude in relation to the ideal and expected wind conditions in addition to the length of the runway and its condition.

Hope this helps.  Ned
