Aviation/Flying/Aerobatics

Question
I live in Gainesville, FL and am a CFII. I am also an aviation tech. writter. I had a question regarding aerobatics and how to get started. I am really interested in flying aerobatics and possible one day teaching. I have asked around and everyone seems to have a different approach. Any advice or schools you know in FL would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Justin

Answer
Sorry for the late reply, I didn't get online to check e-mails over the weekend.  I couldn't recommend one school over another, but you have more options in Florida than in most anywhere else in the country.  Just make sure you go with an instructor with competition or airshow experience.  If I were beginning, I would find someone who teaches in a lower-performance airplane, like a Citabria or Decathlon.  With the Pitts or Extra type of airplane you can develop sloppy habits and never be aware of it, the airplane flies so well it covers for your mistakes.  Good luck, and let me know if you have more questions.

I can answer questions about general aviation, learning to fly, how to get started, and how to buy an airplane. Area of specialty is aerobatic flying. I do not have any expertise in flight training opportunities for students outside the USA, and I am not qualified to offer advice on becoming an airline pilot.

I am no longer active in aerobatic flying, but was formerly a professional airshow performer and aerobatic flight instructor, with extensive experience in Decathlon and Pitts aircraft and light experience in other types. I also competed in IAC sanctioned competition through the Advanced level.
