Aviation/Flying - Fear of Flying

Expert: Paul Ruderham - 11/2/2005

Question
Hi Paul,

Is it true that it is not as safe to fly in the winter months due to the fact that a plane traveling at speeds of 500+ mph is very hard on the planes engine, wings and mechanicial parts?

Derek

Answer
Hi Derek,

It makes no difference. A plane say at 35000 feet doing 500mph is experiencing temperatures of -50 to -60 degrees. The engines are more fuel effcient at high altitudes. The wings have anti ice devices. Don't worry you are safer than driving in your car.

Regards
PR
