Aviation/Flying - King VS Sporty's

Expert: Jeff Davis - 2/7/2004

Question
Hi,
I want to do my groundschool at home, and am hearing some say that King is better, and some saying that Sporty's is better.I want to learn to be a good pilot, not just pass the test!
Thanks!

Answer
I commend you for wanting to take a ground school for the right reasons.  I don't have experience with either of the home study courses you mention, so I can't give any specific expert advice.  In general, any home course will get you through the written test, but it may not be wise to expect too much in terms of learning to be a good pilot.  Most of that comes from the one-on-one interaction with your instructor, and the biggest determining factor is YOUR motivation.  You will be a good pilot because you have that motivation, as evidenced by the nature of your question.  Ask around the hangar and get some advice from some people who have taken the King and Sporty's courses, but don't agonize over the decision, you'll do fine with either one.
