Aviation/Flying - Plane windows

Expert: Ned Dolan - 7/31/2006

Question
Why on large commercail planes must you have the window blinds open on take-off and landing of the aircraft?

Answer
Hi Matthew, I think the answer is the desire to have the interior lighting of the aircraft and the external lighting the same. So the windows are unshaded and at night the interior lights are dimmed.

In the unlikely event that you were to make an emergency exit from the aircraft your eyes would be adjusted to the ambient light and make your exit less risky because you could see where you were going.

Hope this helps.  Ned
