Why did Steve Fossett pick the town of Salina KS to end his epic flight?

Answer
Steve Fossett chose the town of Salina, KS to end his flight because that is where he took off from.  I know that really isn't a great answer, but that's about the only reason I could find.  Why Kansas as opposed to say New York or any other state?  Perhaps it's because Kansas is geographically in the middle of the country.
