Aviation/Flying - air shows

Expert: Paul Ruderham - 7/17/2007

Question
can you tell why air shows are called air tattoos?

Answer
Hi geoff,
I believe it originates from the 17th century as a last call to the soldiers to return to barracks etc. The inns and taverns were ordered by drum signals to doe den tap toe close all the taps so soldiers had to return. this was shortened to tap toe then tattoo. Hence military and civilian events are called tattoos.

Best regards
PR
