Hey marc!....i am 15 years old a freshman in highschool. I am positive im goin 2 join the airforce, and i want 2 become a figter pilot or bomber pilot and after that i may just become a commercial pilot.....my question is how or what is the FASTEST way in becoming a pilot in the airforce or how do i become one, what do i have to do to become a PILOT IN THE AIR FORCE?Do i  got to college first as i get a degree on piloting (thats what i want to go to college for piloting..or do i got straight to the airforce after high scool? Can u please answer my questions step by step i would really appreciate it thank you Marc.

Sorry, I clicked on the wrong answer option (we experts can choose from a list of answers or reasons not to answer).  In terms of college, to be a pilot, you DEFINITELY need a degree.  ROTC works good too - I have a few friends in ROTC who have been awarded pilot slots.  Becoming a pilot in the air force, or any branch of the military is very difficult, especially in this day and age when the Air Force is reducing the numbers of aircraft it has, thus needing fewer pilots.  Your best bet might be to look into getting a pilots liscense before college.  When you are looking for a college, look for one that offers Air Force ROTC.  If you have a pilots liscense, high grades, and perform well there, you may have a glimmer of hope of getting a pilots slot.  If you don't get a pilots slot, there are many other areas in the Air Force you can work in.  I suggest you go to www.airforce.com for more information.  Also, look into groups such as the Civil Air Patrol at www.cap.gov.

Whetever way you go - college, Air Force Academy, etc. - before you actually become a fighter, bomber, or transport pilot is not something that will happen overnight.  It will probably take 2-5 years before you actually become a military aviator.

I hope this information was helpful.

Regards,
Marc

hey marc thanks for the the response it really got me to understand some more. I have a few more questions if you dont mind.

when i chose a college that has the air force rotc, and i end up joining it, that means im part of the air force? meaning im signed up already? or do i still have to sign up?

like you said, if i get good grades and get a pilot licence before i eneter college, i would have a better chance in getting PILOT SLOT when i graduate. DOes getting a pilot slot mean i could become a fighter pilot or bomber pilot in the air force?

**what happens when you get a pilot slot?

what way would you go The air force academy or the ROTC way? were would you have a better chance a becoming a pilot in the airforce?

lets say i make it in the air force as a pilot is going to be easy for me or am i going to have enough  hours to fly commercial planes in an airline?

thanks marc for the help i really apreciate it.

Answer
As far as I know in regards to Air Force ROTC, there is no actual committment until your junior year of college, though you may want to check up on this.

Getting a pilot slot only means you'll get flight training.  You have to pass that before you're a pilot, and they don't just teach flying - there is a survival training school - I think it is in the mountains of Washington State.

If I had to choose between becoming an officer by way of ROTC or the Academy, I would choose ROTC.  Remember - the academies of the Army, Navy, and Air Force are EXTREMELY hard to get in.  Additionally, if I were to join ROTC and decide it's not for me, I just drop it.  If I went to the Air Force Academy, I'd have to look for a different school if I felt that I couldn't hack it.

If you become a pilot in any of the armed forces, you will be a hot commodity when you get out.  The reason being that you already have a lot of training, so its that much less airlines would have to spend on training you.

I hope this helps.

Marc
