Question
Aside from the exam fee, books, and cost of aircraft rental, if i knew a CFI who would not charge me for their instructing services, what other costs are there?  The hours logged and signed by that CFI with their CFI certification number is all that is required in order for the hours to be valid?  thanks in advance for your time and consideration

Answer
Yes, the flight hours and instruction are valid regardless of whether the CFI charged you for his services.  In addition to the hours, a CFI (typically the one who has given you most or all of your instruction) must recommend you for your flight test with a designated examiner.  Also, you will need to pass a written test sometime in advance of the flight test; you may want to enroll in a class to prepare for the test, or you and your instructor may choose to prepare on your own.  One cost you didn't mention is the medical certificate, which must be issued by a physician approved by the FAA.  The cost of the physical exam varies, as each physician sets his own fees.  Good luck with your training!
