Question For many years now people have told me that whenever I'm near them they can feel things(spirits) I too feel this. Ive always had an interest in this and have gone to spiritualist churches and mediums. Now three different times by mediums I have been told that I have the ability to do as they are doing I do read books but what else can I do to connect to the spirit world as I've been told that I can do this I wondered what other ways I can learn.
Answer Hi Amy,
First, let me clarify that connecting with spirits, non-corporeal beings, and the Divine is basically the same process, and I use the terms interchangeably.
It is helpful to talk to others and read about others who do this, so you're on the right track there. Have you read any of the Abraham-Hicks stuff? In the intros, they talk about their process in learning to channel. (http://www.wicca-spirituality.com/resources.html has a link and some info.)
If you find anyone who is very good at it, whose ethics you admire, you might ask if they could help you learn. This is not always the best way to learn, because people's egos often get involved. And you can be steered wrong with the best of intentions, too, if they've learned something erroneous.
I think the best way to learn to contact spirits, especially if you can already do so to some degree, is to just CLEAR YOURSELF OUT OF THE WAY.
You already know you can contact other planes of existence. The only thing blocking you is your own mind. The beliefs and perceptions that you hold, the traumas you haven't resolved, the mechanical habits of thought that you've developed... these stop us ALL from hearing clearly.
So start with yourself.
When you do your emotional and psychological work, you clear space for Spirit to communicate to you. Or, more accurately, for you to be able to hear and understand what Spirit has been trying to tell you. ; - )
So how do you do that? Any practice that clears your mind or reduces your ego/personality will help. Meditations such as mind watch, breath work, Vipassina, or mindfulness will be the greatest help to you. If those are too big a step to start with, try visualizations, Divine Light Invocation, mantra, mandalas, Hidden Language Hatha Yoga, Tai Chi, or something else that makes it a little easier to clear the mind. Also, perhaps the biggest thing you can do is to ASK. Let the Divine know that you are willing to do this work, and ask to be open and clear so that the information can come through you. And feel gratitude for the fact that It Already Does Come Through You. That gratitude is a big key to receiving more.
Finally, let me offer you a place to start. It may seem inconsequential, but it's likely to be the most important part of the process...
Ask yourself WHY. Why do you want to do this? What is the purpose of it? What do you hope to gain?
For every answer, look beneath it for more. There will be layers and layers of truth to be discovered, and possibly some self-deception as well. Keep asking: Why?
Knowing your motivations clearly is the biggest single step you can make. Having pure intentions will greatly increase your ability to channel. It's not easy to have perfectly pure intentions, but perfection isn't required.
Still, if you're wanting it for base reasons, like feeling special or important, or getting rich off other people's grief, or whatever, your own mind will be blocking the readings.
If the most important thing to you is to serve the Divine, help people, and share the gifts She has given you with others, then you're well on your way. Just keep asking, How can I serve?

PS, I don't mean to imply there's something wrong with earning an income from using your gifts. I think that's the way money is meant to work, and the energy you give out must come back to you in some way (though not always directly as a paycheque). Just that if money is your main motivation, you will probably have difficulty connecting to Spirit.
