What is the signficance of a Master giving his sub a new name?

Thank you for the question. Let me see if I can give you my perception of this.

For some masters its a matter of ownership. By changing a slaves name to fit something he or she prefers is a reminder to the slave and those around the slave of his or her place in the slaves life.

Another idea is a sense of rebirth that comes from changing the slave’s name, its a symbolic gesture of leaving behind their old life and accepting a new life as slave.

Lastly, a name change can be more of a scene or lifestyle name to protect the slave’s identity. Often times in the case where people are active in the BDSM community and want to protect themselves if they have kids or ex spouses who might attempt to take the slaves kids if they found out they are in an alternative lifestyle such as this.

Whether the name change is legal or not a person’s identity to the slave is core to their autonomy. Once could argue the role of mastery in a master slave relationship is to greatly reduce the slaves autonomy.
