BDSM/Boy role

Question
I keep hearing talk amongst folks in the gay BDSM world talk about their "boy".  Can you help me to understand the boy role and what it means.  An on-line acquaintance has told me that he is considering becoming a boy to someone.  I don't want to appear ignorant and want to be supportive so would appreciate your insights.

Basically it's just a way of saying "submissive" or "bottom" or anything else. It's just a synonym is all. :)

And it's not limited to any one sexual orientation. It happens to be somewhat prevalent in most BDSM circles, especially age play, as well as the Gay S/M community. :)
