Okay, I am new to the scene and want some clarification regarding the differences between a top and a dominant. In many places--resources--you will find them used interchangeably. In other places there seems to be a distinction although no one is explaining what exactly those differences are. Please help.

Thanks for the question.. i hope i am able to offer you some insite..

After years in the scene i have come what i think the difference is between a Top and a Dominant.

From my perspective, A top is an indication of someone's role in play and sex... a top is someone who enjoys applying stress/pain to the bottom. In sex a top is one who likes to be in control during sex.

A dominanat can be all of the things a top is. however, is more of a personality trait. The dominant wants or needs to be the guiding force within the relationship and in times of sex and play. It is important for one who identifies as dominant to be partnered with someone who is of a submissive nature or who has the desire to submit to a specific dominant partner.

A dominant can be a top. However, a top does not necessarily mean they are dominant outside the play space to the sexual encounter...Example: There are some slaves who top but in relationships do not want to be in a dominant role.

I think its also worth noting here that Dominance and submission is not restricted to just sex and play but more discribes that dynamic of the relationship in general.. i do not think that these terms should be used interchangably, especialy when someone is learning the "ropes" so to speak for the first time..
