Question
I'm just getting in to this lifestyle as a dominant male and I'm curious about what might make a woman want to submit to all the things conducive to a Dom/sub relationship such as spanking/whipping, humiliation, bondage and serving the dominant man in general. I'm looking for possible downsides that can result from the psyche of a woman who is willing to give a large part of herself as well as control of many of her actions over to a loving dominant male.

I can not give you a lot of down sides to this lifestyle at all.  I can tell you that part of what makes a submissive is traits from inside of them.  I do not know where mine came from, I do know they are there and that well I am able to submit to another.  Not all like or enjoy pain and serving is not about that at all.  

There is some ting inside of me that just needs it and it is what makes me tick.

The down side might be to say you are a sub and then get into it and find that your not happy.  You need to build the relationship and communication is the key over all.
