Question
Hey Oscar,

I'm currently writing a short film revolving around spirituality and BDSM, but I want to make it as authentic as I can. I've visted some websites that tell me some people believe they can become closer to God through practicing BDSM and there's actually a rather large history of this going to thie Chrtistian churches. But I was wondering if you had any more information on the beliefs of this practice, and if they practice spirituality BDSM different from regular BDSM. Also, I was wondering what sort of set ups they use, props, and different sexual tortures. I hope that's not too many questions, I know it's a lot but I hope you can help me out.

Thanks,
Sydney

Answer
Hi Sidney:

I am not too aware about specific sites devoted about the religious aspects of BDSM. But there are plenty of books and studies about S&M as related to expiation or mortifying for sins commited and purification.  I can give you my insighst and experiences about what is out there and what i have seen and experienced.

Some consider the intense experiences one achieves in BDSM are illuminating and elightening. Akin to what one goes through vision quests, out of body experiences, and periods of intense stress to body/mind. The combination of endorphins, adrenaline and the ritual included could be somewhat paralel to other religious practices and their beliefs. Some other people just have a fetish with religious imagery or religious figures for their upbringing. Many other cultures around the world believe in cleaning your sins and showing your devotion by withstanding pain for a religious fetsival or a martyr, many times achieving an altered state of conciousness, which some people link to religious states of "enlightening".  Hence people into BDSm  do achieve those states in their practices that happens to be more sensual and/or ritualistic than many other practices. So perhaps somepeople do find religion through BDSM that way.
But I may be over simplifying, But in any case I am not sure about specifics of an organized church of BDSM , so to speak. <smile> The practices can vary, but many are more S&M than B&D, but sensory deprivaion may be included.
I could elaborate more, but feel free to ask any details. But as i said no organized religious group per se.
I hope this helps.
Be well

Oscar G.
