BMW/1987 BMW 325i transmission only reverses

Question
Hi, as I was driving my 325i I changed from 1st to 2nd with a bit of power and force, I heard a loud metal noise,I tried to accelerate and the car would not move and the stick shift was completely loose (as if it came out of some socket). The car starts but does not engage all of its forward gears.  To engage reverse gear I need to fiddle with it a bit and push forcefully to the left.  Could you please advise if the transmission or the linkage are faulty or if I need to rebuild the transmission.  Many Thanks

Answer
Emanuel,
Take a look under the car, and make sure your linkage did not become disconnected.  Hopefully this is the problem.

Otherwise it sounds like you may have broken something inside the transmission.

Have a tranny shop work on the transmission.

Expertise

I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.

Experience

I have owned six different E30's over the last 10 years. I do all my own work, and know about ever nut and bolt on these cars.
