BMW/'86 325 starting when engine's cold

Question
Hi.

Lately, I've been unable to start my car when the engine's cold without popping the clutch.  Once the car's warmed and been running for a few minutes, no problem.  The dealer can't find a cause and thinks it's the oil dipstick which wasn't in securely.  This doesn't sound right to me.  Also, when the ac's on and I come to a stop, the car stalls sometimes.

Answer
Joanne,
It "could" be the dipstick causing a vacuum leak and letting air into the engine.  I dont think it would cause a huge problem, but I suppose it could.  Unfortunately, I would ride with the A/C off until you fix the problem.  The engine has to turn that compressor, and it's not running it's best, so it causes the engine to stall.  Its alot like making you to run on a tread-mill when you have the flu.

I would have a shop check for vacuum leaks and clean the idle control valve.. this could be the problem.  Also, if the car has not had a tune-up in the last 2-3 years I would suggest one.

 Good luck!
 Josh

Expertise

I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.

Experience

I have owned six different E30's over the last 10 years. I do all my own work, and know about ever nut and bolt on these cars.
