BMW/89 525i e34 oil level warning

Question
Josh - saw your earlier answer about the m20 oil level in an e30.  Is there an oil level sensor or float on the m20 in the e34?  I keep getting a warning message about a low oil level every time I turn her on or off.

Answer
Dave,
Yes there is a sensor on the M20.  If you go to the driver's side (US models) and look down the side of the engine you can see a spot where the oil pan sticks out to the side about 6 inches.  On this little area there is a sensor that sits on top.  I haven't really had any problems with them going bad on my cars, but I suppose it's possible.  Make sure your oil level is correct.  If the oil gets 1/2 quart low it will make this light come on.

 Good luck,
 Josh

Expertise

I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.

Experience

I have owned six different E30's over the last 10 years. I do all my own work, and know about ever nut and bolt on these cars.
