Question
Dear Guys,
Thamks for your site and your expertise - hope you can help me! I am the proud second owner of the above vehicle which is in excellent mechanical and overall condition. Approximately two years ago, the car began having an occasional problem shifting gears primarily from first to second, where it seems to shift out of first into some sort of angel gear and then bang into second. The gearbox is a 4HP22EH. If i drive mildly, the problem does not occur.  If i drive very harshly, the problem does not occur. If i drive a little on hard side of normal, which is the way i always drive, it occurs. Sometimes as i mentioned though, it never occurs at all. It is extremely frustrating and i have been to authorised and non-authorised workshops alike. I have even replaced the transmission but to no avail. I have also changed the mode selector switch to no avail. I have spent thousands of dollars but the problem persists. I am never selling the car and really want to fix this very very annoying problem.

Best Regards,

Chris Maher

Answer
Chris, unfortunately that is a rare car (an awesome rare car) And I have no Experience with the Big Six engines and their transmissions.  If you have changed the transmission and still have the problem then it's definately not the transmission.  Have you checked the kick-down cable? it has some adjustment that will sometimes help shifting.  I am very sorry I couldnt' help more with this, but I just do not know enough about these cars to be of any assistance.
 Thanks for trying,
 Josh

Expertise

I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.

Experience

I have owned six different E30's over the last 10 years. I do all my own work, and know about ever nut and bolt on these cars.
