Question
Hi,

I recently bought a BMW 5 Series (1998) and was wanting to find out what I should do to look after my car e.g prevent engine flooding, engine maintenance, etc

Thanks

Answer
Michellea,
I dont think you will have any issues with engine flooding.. this only happens with old carburetted engines.

The most important thing to do is to keep engine oil changed.  I would HIGHLY suggest using synthetic engine oil.  It costs a little more, but WILL NOT break down like conventional (out of the ground) motor oil.  If you take your car to have the oil changed, you are likely putting conventional oil in.  The oil change place probably pays $0.50 for a quart of this, and they dont care how long your engine runs for.  So if you can find a place that will put synthetic oil in... you will be much better.

Hope this helps,
 Josh

Expertise

I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.

Experience

I have owned six different E30's over the last 10 years. I do all my own work, and know about ever nut and bolt on these cars.
