Question
I have a 97 328i convertible with 68K miles -- I no longer have the
owners manual -- Two days Assuming it is refering to the brakes but,
what about the brakes?  Can you gives me a couple of suggestions.

AND

Just today, the Check Engine Light came on! What can this mean? The gas
cap is on properly.

The car runs nicely and I hear/feel nothing unusual about the brakes or
engine...  Thank you!

Answer
Brian,
As I put in my stats, I am not very knowledgable about the E36, but know more about the older E30 3-series.  I'm pretty sure this "brake disc" means that your brake pads are getting low, and the sensor is reporting so.  The check engine can light up for MANY reasons.  To find out this reason, you have to take the car to a shop that has a scan tool, and have them read the fault codes.  Your car will tell the mechanic what is wrong with it's self.

 Hope this helps,
 Josh

Expertise

I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.

Experience

I have owned six different E30's over the last 10 years. I do all my own work, and know about ever nut and bolt on these cars.
