Question
Hello, I've got an '87 325e with "locked" u-joints on the driveshaft. My BMW mechanics got it unfrozen by spraying some oil into the u-joints as best they could, but they say that because the u-joints are factory sealed and are one-piece with the driveshaft, I basically need a new driveshaft.

Question #1: is it dangerous to drive with the u-joints in this condition?

Question #2: what do you think about aftermarket driveshafts with replaceable/serviceable u-joints? Such as Driveline in Portland?

 This is a notorious problem, and most driveshafts actually make a thumping noise when you pull away from a stop (happened on two of my E30's).  Your mechanic is correct, the U-joints are factory sealed, and in there for good.  I have searched everywhere for replacement U-joints, with no luck.

 So that leaves you with two options:  Live with it, or fix it.

 To answer your first question, I dont know if "dangerous" is the word, but there certainly could be bad reprocussions for not replacing the U-joints.  There is a center support bearing, so the driveshaft will not drop down and pole-vault the car like many older vehicles.  However, pulling out in front of a car, and having the driveshaft fail would be most unfortunate, leaving you sitting in a precarious position!  So personally I would save up the money and fix the problem.

 Aftermarket driveshafts are pretty much your only choice here.  Unless you know a dealership who still has some of those old driveshafts in stock.  Most dealerships will get rid of parts that are older than 10 years old.  They could possibly "get" you a driveshaft, but it will likely be an aftermarket unit like you are already looking at, then they will pad the price so they can make some money on it.

 So... I would do your homework, search the net looking for a good priced driveshaft WITH a warrantee.  If I can help with anything else, please dont hesitate to ask.
