About Josh Fields
Expertise
I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.

Experience
I have owned six different E30's over the last 10 years. I do all my own work, and know about ever nut and bolt on these cars.

BMW - Oil Dipstick reading

Expert: Josh Fields - 1/1/2007

Question
Can't figure out min/max marks on 325ci dipstick.  Dipstick looks like the one here: http://www.bmw325i.net/maint_oil_level.shtml
Is it the grooves/slots or the white dots?

Answer
Steve,
To check the level it's the grooves.  If you are holding the dipstick with one hand, the groove FARTHEST from your hand means 1-quart low, the groove closest to your hand means Full.  If your oil is below the farthest groove, then you need to add oil to get the oil level between the grooves (closest to the top groove).

 Good luck,
 Josh
