It is probably the air mass meter boot. I had this same problem on my 87 325e. There was a tear in the boot sucking in way too much air. Hope this helps.

I have a 91 318is and have been having similar issues as nathen. However, I have done a thourogh tune up and the issue still exists. Very rough idle, wants to die when stopped, it will actually only rev to about (3000rpm). i  have also replaced the TPS, fuel filter, air, plugs, starter, i have not checked the fuel line.. any input?

I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.

Experience

I have owned six different E30's over the last 10 years. I do all my own work, and know about ever nut and bolt on these cars.
