As great as that explanation about valve clicking is, it looks like Josh didn't really read the question very carefully.  Like the guy said, the sound is coming from the transmission area.  Valves can cause a ticking/clicking sound, but if its more of a rattling then it is probably play in the gearbox.  I have the same sound, but I know its the gearbox because if I mash the clutch and let the gearbox stop spinning, the rattling stops.  There's also more play than I think there should be in the gearbox while I'm driving.  You should check for both of these and if you're in the same situation as me, I think you need new bearings in your transmission.

Expertise

I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.

Experience

I have owned six different E30's over the last 10 years. I do all my own work, and know about ever nut and bolt on these cars.
