Question
I own a BWM E21 (1980).

The key does not spring back when the key is turned to start the car. The car starts fine but the key must be turned back to stopt he starter mototr. Assuming a spring does this is it easy to replace?

Answer
Richard,
This is a bit older than I deal with but if it is anything like the later cars like the E34 then your problem is a combination of the ignition lock cylinder and the actual lock mechanism on the steering column. I really should know this since I have an 83' 633 csi but I am really useless here. All I can suggest is asking the other BMW expert, Josh Fields. He seems to deal mostly with E30 cars but he may be able to help you. Good luck.
