Question
i have a e30 316i 1991 on a h plate when i accelerate in any gear the rev limiter comes in at 4500 rpm the tapets are a bit ratterly could this be the reason can you help

Answer
John,
I have absolutely NO experience with the 316i, we never got them in the US.  However I have heard of this problem, but only with the 6-cylinder cars.  I have never had this problem, only know of other's whe have.

I if I remember correctly it was the throttle position switch, and it was not making contact at "wide open throttle".  So you might test your TPS and see if it's the problem.  Also I think the O2 sensor might have something to do with this as well.

The valves "shouldn't" cause this problem, but I've never ran my valves very loose, so I wouldn't know.

 Hope this helps,
 Josh

Expertise

I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.

Experience

I have owned six different E30's over the last 10 years. I do all my own work, and know about ever nut and bolt on these cars.
