Hi Josh,

I have a 98 328i cabrio.  I suspect that my question is quite simple.

I have heard contrary feedback on when I should be shifting gears.  Some say that I should not shift until around 4000-5000 rpm, and others say that I should be shifting at a lower RPM.  The car is stock (6-cylinder).

Can you give me your thoughts?

 This is a question with alot of controversy (for some reason).  It's rather simple though... drive it how you want to.  I have a 99 328is, and I shift at around 3000-3500rpm.  The only reason I do that is because it's where the engine is making plenty of power without working too hard.  But if you drive the car too easy, shifting at 1500-2000rpm, you will allow carbon and other deposits to build, just make sure you "blow it out" every once in a while.  There's an old saying "give it an Italian tune-up"  that means going out and flogging the car, shifting close to redline to keep everything in good working order.  These engines like to be driven, and driven hard.  I wouldn't over-do it though, respect the car.

 Do what you are comfortable with, as there is no "one-way" to drive a car... but there are ways to prolong it's life.

I can answer questions related to the BMW e30. These are the cars produced from 1984-1991 (1992 for convertable) in the United states. I am more fluent with the six cylinder models, although few things changed for the 4 cylinder cars. I know most of the problematic areas of these cars, and have found ways to fix them.
