what causes this condition?

I'll assume you mean besides empty tank and dead battery.....

Can I also assume the engine turns over fine?  Did the engine just stop?  Or has this car been sitting for a long time?

Fuel:  Start with the pump.  Is it getting power?  If so, is it pumping?  If so, check the fuel filter.  

Spark:  Battery good?  Ignition wires good?

Not very familiar with these e30s.  Might be a fuse that shuts down everything.....Always a good idea on issues like this to check EVERY fuse.
