i am considering purchasing a 1984 bmw 325e but am concerned about repair costs. how much more expensive are bmw's to work on?

how much more than what?  BMW's DO cost more to maintain.  If you do all your own work, they take more time, but are not too bad.  

Regardless, with a BMW you are paying for performance and handling. Most American and Japanese cars will cost much less to maintain, and be more reliable.  Especially with an '84.

If you want the car for fun, this is a fun car.  If you need it every day to get to school/work, or if you don't do your own work, you're going to regret it.
