Might help to tell you it is a 1996 328i. Thanks.
As you are probably aware, it sounds like the unit may be going bad.
Some BMW radios have a fuse on the back of the dash unit.
I'd recommend taking it out of the dash, checking for fuses, then cleaning all connectors and putting it back in.
