On many 1985-1995 era BMWs the taillights and brake lights are controlled by the so called "mustard relay." This relay is a common trouble point on these cars and will cause malfunctioning lights. The solution is to replace the relay ($60), or to resolder cracked solder joints, or for the ambitious person with the stubborn problem, to unwind an inch of new wire from the relay coil and resolder.

The problem is the bulbs you are using...I did the same thing spent hours, bought stuff I didn't need ect., take the light bulbs out all of them (bulbs for breaks, reverse ect. you'll notice the bulbs are all the same)the european bulbs they'll sell you if you ask for the bulb by 1985 bmw 528e are the wrong ones! You need the bulbs w/ one flat connector piece as you'll notice (not two like the difficult american auto makers made it) remember when working on this car things are simple and make sense think logical. See ya on the road!
