BMW Repair - My BMW chimes, but no dash lights turn on.

Expert: John Kingery - 5/4/2009

Question
My 96' 318i randomly makes a chiming noise whenever I drive it.  I look down at the dash to see if any lights come on or if any of the gauges are reading there's a problem, but nothing.  I changed the oil yesterday (before It started making the noise) and never got the computer reset, so the car still thinks it needs an oil change. Could that be what's causing the problem?

Answer
I don't believe these will chime when the oil change is needed.

I'm assuming it wasn't about 38F and you were getting a "possible road icing" warning.

Or is it at XX:59?  The memo feature on the radio will chime to alert you the news is about on.
