BMW Repair - 2001 525 I Series...Wipers and Radio Not Working, Service engine soon Light on

Expert: John Kingery - 7/21/2009

Question
I just purchased a 2001 BMW 525I Series. The car only has 54,000 and was supposedly bought at a bankruptcy auction. The interior is immaculate..The exterior just has small scratch on back bumper....I feel like this car was taken well care of..clean car fax...The radio comes on as far as the lights, and it goes through the scan and seek modes, but no sound comes out.....also the button to unlock the doors does not work, nor do the back windows roll down...I drove it to work for the first time this morning and the service engine soon light came on....Help!!!I am praying I did not buy a headache!!!
Thanks!!!

Answer
Odds are you bought a very good car.  There are a host of small items like these on BMW's.  Stay on top of them, and it's not bad....let them go, and you can get a real headache.

Let's start with the easy one.
Your back windows don't go down.  Do they not go down from the back switches?  Or any of the switches?  There is a rear-window lock-out on the car. Safety feature that prevents kids getting hurt.  Make sure that's not on.

By the button to unlock the doors....do you mean the switch on the center console?  Do the locks all work otherwise?  if so, likely bad switch.  Likely a soda spilled in it.  Try removing it and either taking it apart and cleaning it (if your into that), or replacing it.  Or have the dealer do it, not much

The radio could be a host of things, but is likely a fuse.  Check your fuses in the various compartments, then also for some in-line fuses around the amplifier in back.

None of these should be significant, even if you take them to a dealer.  Again, stay on top of the little things, and you'll love this car a long time.
