1995 525i instrument cluster went out ? costly or easy fix ? car runs perfect otherwise.

not too difficult, but you need to have your dealer reprogram it.  (Otherwise you could take a 200K miles car, and drop in a 50K miles cluster.)

It varies by model.  Check with your dealer on what that would cost, then check out car-parts.com and ebay for a used one.
