Question
okay,

My son released the top with the emer. release under the rear seat. When he did that, it released both electric motors in the trunk. He reset both motors and now they are out of sync. I have released them and tryed to reset them and have failed as well.

The car is a 1996 328i E36.

Chuck, If you need help I need a lot more information about what you are trying to do. On what model? E36cic I am guessing. What repairs you have done? Help me help you. Give me some back ground.

Answer
Chuck, completely open the C-top and stow top. Make sure the lid latches propery engauge the cable operated locks. Press down lid down fully. Make sure both motors are engauged in their transmissions. Pull the Lid cables tight on the motor/trans swing arm. That emergency handle has to be pushed all the way back in it's original position. Okay this instruction is by the book. Insert key in ignition. Press 'open' button and hold down. Turn key to radio position. After about 10 seconds the Storage lid will lock closed. Release 'open' button. Now Run a function check to see if C-top works normally. I always run C-tops w/engine running so as not to drain the battery. My question is why was the Lever pulled? Did the top work normally? If you had an issue with the top not working and had to pull the handle, then reinitializing the motors may not solve your underlieing problem
