Question
Hi, I have a 1989 BMW 325i.  When I insert the key into the ignition/starter switch it will go to position 1 (Steering unlocked), sometimes position 2 (Ignition switched on) and will NOT crank to position 3 (Started engages and cranks engine).  Do you believe the entire ignition is worn out or is it sensor/signal related problem?

Answer
You turn the key all the way and nothing happens or you can not turn the key to the start position? If the starter will not turn it may be there and not the switch. If it cannot turn to the start position it is a mechanical problem with the key tumblers.
