Don, thank you for availing yourself to these questions.

I was able to open passenger door a couple of months ago, now it won't open

Dealership wanted 600 to destroy inside and replace panel

Is there another way other than destroying the panel?  (and do I have to disable the airbag before opening it?)

I am mechanically inclined and prepared to do it myself

I am not sure also.Being mechanically inclined I would attempt this task know that at worst you will have panels to replace.Where it opened before something has either fallen off or stuck and brake.As far as the air bag goes I would see no need to disable it attempting a door repair.
