Question
What is the authority for the prescription that the International House of Justice be comprised exclusively of males; more specifically, is this a directive from the Messenger himself or is it the result of interpretations of the Messenger's teachings (such as that which occurred with the proscription against homosexuality)?

Thank you for your question. (sorry I couldn't change "International" in your message.)

It's not a directive from Baha'u'llah, the central Figure of the Baha'i Movement. Unfortunately, it's actually a literal-minded interpretation of Abdul-Baha's advice to an early Bahai committee and community. Since Reform Bahais do not accept the fraudulent will and testament of 1921, forged by Shoghi Effendi's family, we do not believe the practice of the other Bahai denominations in this regard is at all authoritative and applicable.

Abdul-Baha and Baha'u'llah both emphasized that religion evolves and is progressive. We human beings tend to literal interpretations. The whole point of The Book of Certitude, for instance, is that religious truth is figurative and evolutionary. It only stands to reason that their Teaching applies to the Bahai Revelation as well.

When a legitimate Universal House of Justice is elected by Reform Bahais, who have returned to Abdul-Baha's actual 1912 authentic Covenant, women will certainly be eligible to serve on it, as in all other capacities of their choosing.

Awards and Honors
A Fulbright-Hays scholar to China in 1994, I studied at Beijing University, the Buddhist Mogao Caves on the old Silk Road, and elsewhere in China, including Hong Kong and the Academia Sinica in Taiwan. While a National Endowment for the Humanities scholar in 1995 on India, I further explored the conflicts between the traditional regional civilizations of Islamic and Hindu cultures and modernity. I have been an outspoken advocate of the United Nations and was an accredited participant at the UN Millennium Forum (2000).
