Bahamas/1st visit to Nassau

Question
I will be visiting with a friend our first visit to Nassau, Bahamas.  We are staying right in town on the main strip, Bay St.  However I'd like to get away from all the touristy stuff and am wondering if there are places on the tiny island that will really give us the feeling of getting away from all that.  Also we will be renting a car and I believe  there is a ferry that could take us from New Providence  to other nearby islands.  Just wondering if any of them can also ferry the car we are renting so we can take a quick look at the island by driving around during a day visit.  I have visited Jamaica twice and if you have been to Jamaica, how similar is Nassau to Jamaica?  Any other ideas of what to do do off the beaten track so to speak is especially invited.  Thanks.  I love to travel, love tropical islands (I lived in Guam for 6 years and traveled in Micronesia, Philippines and to Bali, Indonesia)and would take any of your suggestions to heart as it sounds like you have been many places there in the Caribbean.  I plan to return to Jamaica to continue my exploration there too.

Answer
Hi, I don't know much about the island around Nassau. We went to the Abacos, the out islands. Now they were great! They just have one little town on each island, everyone is so laid back and friendly. We just loved it! Our favorite was Hopetown. I know this didn't help you much, but since I have never been to where you are going thought I would tell you about some of the other islands.
