About Barry Benjamin
Expertise
I am a hotel owner in the Out Islands for the last 30 years. I would like to help people understand what the Out Island experience is all about. I can answer questions about what hotels are like, what to do there, if they are moderate or expensive, who goes there generally, what the weather is like, what there is to do on individal islands, some contacts of people to talk to, a little history of some of the islands and my opinion on what are the most comfortable places to visit.

Subject: Can my wife and I get passage...

Question
Can my wife and I get passage on an island trader type boat, or supply boat, that visits the various islands, maybe especially the Out Islands, taking about 10 days to two weeks to pass through the islands.  Small boat carrying maybe six to ten passangers in addition to supply or delivery. Any time of year OK, but maybe not during storm season.  Thanks for your advice.  Mark Hannon

Answer
There are commercial boats that go to the Out Islands. They are called 'mail' boats and they take freight and passengers. They regularly go from Potters Cay in Nassau to individual islands like Bimini, Cat Island and Exuma. I don't know the schedules but from my past experience MOST of the time you will have to go back to Nassau each time you want to go to a differnet major island. There might be some exceptions but you should contact the Ministry of Tourism on the bahamas.com web site to get more info on schedules and prices.
