Balancing Career and Family/Switching to rotation shifts

Question
Hello Jan,

Here is my situation. I am fresh out of university and am looking for a better job. Until I find a better job, I am working as a security rover.

Presently, I am working straight afternoon shifts (3:30pm to 11:30pm) with weekends off.

I have been offered a better paying position as a concierge/communication hub officer in the same building. However, I will be switching to a rotation shift. Below is what my rotation schedule looks like:

Week 1: Tues-Fri (4pm-12am) and Sat (12pm-12am)
Week 2: Mon (4pm-12am), off Tues, Wed, and Thurs, Fri(12am-8am), Sat(12am-12pm)
Week 3: Sun (12am-12pm), Mon-Thurs(12am-8am), Fri and Sat off
Week 4: Sun-Mon are off, cycle starts at week 1 again.

I am just worried about how it will affect my progress in looking for a better job, and how it will affect my social life. Keep in mind that I have rejected this promotion two times, and this may be my last chance to move up. I am only considering it now because there is more responsibility, I will be doing desk work, and will be managing seven computers. I am hoping that taking the promotion will make my resume look better since I will be more or less running the show.

Should I go for the rotation, or should I stick to straight afternoons patrolling based on what I have told you?

Sincerely,

James

Answer
Hi James;
My first thought is to take the position and to get yourself ahead in life. You have to keep in mind that you won't be working this shift the rest of your life, only until your next promotion!

We all have to 'pay our dues' so to say , we have to take the lousy jobs in order to get the bonus jobs. By doing this, it will give you the knowledge of what this position entails and what needs to be done to achieve total expertise. When you get a promotion to your next level and you are over the person that takes this job, you will know if they are slacking off! Get the idea?

Sometimes it looks as though something may be lousy and in reality it is opening other doors for you.

As far as looking for another job; there is always the Internet! You can look for a job, send your resume, have a phone interview or schedule your appointment according to your work schedule. The NEW employer only praises those that have consideration for their employers and aren't willing to waste anyones time.

Good Luck James and make a lot of money and always give 110%; any dummy can only give 100%, be exceptional!
