Ballet/pointe

Question
Hi--I'm almost 15 an i love ballet. i want to do pointe and be more serious
about ballet, but first, let me explain. I started ballet when i was three and
had class once or twice a week until i was twelve. I quit, then restarted a year
ago. Now i take classes twice a week in adult/teen beginning ballet 2 (not
that i expect you to know what that entails--just trying to let you know my
level). i really wish i never quit and now long to do pointe.  I know im not
good enough for one of the big, rigorous dance companies in my area that i
would like to join. Will i ever be able to do pointe? what can i do to help with
that?

Answer
Hi Allison. I think the best way you can progress is to get The Perfect Pointe Book. The author's link for it is at http://www.theballetstore.com on the front page.

It will enable you to practice safely, as it outlines correct technique and strengthening exercises in great detail. The author also provides practice charts and self-assessment tests so you can be certain of your progress. You will also get videos and photos. I really like the fine details she provides. You will use this book for years to come. It covers basic ballet technique; posture, balance and turnout, and shows some anatomy too.

The other essential element this book provides, is how to strengthen the soles of the feet for pointe shoes, a detail that is left out of most ballet training. To date I have not seen one negative review of this book, and I believe it is one of a kind.

You can decide on your home practice routines and how much work you want to put into this. I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results if you apply the exercises properly. And of course the improvements will affect everything you do in ballet class for the better.

Feel free to ask any further questions that might come up. All the best, Dianne
