Ballet/Pointe with Double Jointed Toes

Question
So I have double jointed big toes, and I am looking to start pointe in 1-2 years, after I complete all the necessary classes required by my studio. I have taken ballet for quite a while now and have never had any problems with releve or any other basic moves/positions. However, I'm worried that my toes will make pointe extra hard for me. (They tend to curl under when I point unless I consciously try to lengthen them, which has become habit now.) Is it still okay for me to go ahead with the pre-pointe classes? I am also asking my instructors.

Answer
Hi Kelly.

Keep working on lengthening your toes - that's good. And basically, every ballet class you take is a pre-pointe class. Pointe work is just the same ballet movements in pointe shoes. If a student is strong enough, they put on pointe shoes and do the same things. Gradually, of course because it takes getting used to. But the strength and control should already be there.

Your teachers can tell if you're ready for a pre-pointe class. And if they think not, ask them what all you need to work on to progress.

Here's an article that will help you also:

I also recommend The Perfect Pointe Book, and the author's link for that is at http://www.theballetstore.com It is a complete training for pre-pointe, presented so that you can practice at home safely, and know exactly what you are doing. Every part of your ballet technique must be strengthened, as well as every part of your foot. I think you'll find it interesting. It is a download to your computer with photos and videos also. You'll be ready faster than anyone would have thought if you use this book.

It sounds to me like you are preparing for pointe in a very sensible manner. All the best, Dianne.
