Question
QUESTION: Hello.
I am 13 years old, almost 14 and a dancer of hip-hop for 4 years and tap for 2 years.  I recently started ballet after stopping at age 8 because I think it is a beautiful sport and I also hope to get on pointe.  Problem is, I was put in an intermediate class and everyone already knows everything and nothing is being taught step by step and I am having trouble keeping up.  I really am enjoying myself but I want to learn the basics quickly.  I must say, I have strong ankles and feet and a good arch and I think I would be capable of being a pointe dancer if I peresevered.  How long do you think it will take me to get on pointe and is there any way to improve my knowledge of the basic steps? Thanks so much...I really appreciate it!

ANSWER: I would get a copy of the book "Basic Principles of Classical Ballet" by Agrippina Vagonova.  This breaks down each individual step and shows how ballet is organized.  Once you get your basic technique strong you will be ready to go on pointe.  This could take a few months or a few years.  Talk to your teacher and get her opinion as well.  Good luck!

QUESTION: I have another question if you don't mind... I'm having trouble with the jetes or grand jetes.  I'm not sure which one it is, but I know I can't do them.  Any tips?
Thanks- Adrianna

Answer
Jetes are small jumps where you start with the right leg front.  The left leg brushes off to the side, the right pushes up straight and goes to cou de pied and then you land on the left leg.

Grand jetes are huge split jumps.  They don't have a develope into them.  Think of them as a huge battement (kick) with the front leg up and over, and then a huge kick with the back leg.  Work on your grand battements and you splits to make these easier.  Also make sure you're leaning slightly back when you take off so you don't collapse into the leg that you're kicking.
Hope this helps!

Expertise

I can answer lots about ballet, specifically the Vaganova syllabus. I'm still training, but both my parents were professional dancers, so most answers will be coming from them, not me. :) They're the experts. Obviously, questions about difficult technique, etc, would be better answered with someone else, but if you're just becoming interested in dancing, or are having problems with basic steps, like pirouettes or plies, then I may be able to help

Experience

I've seen ballet since the age of 0, because of my parents, and I am training to become a professional dancer now.
