Question
I danced (tap, jazz, ballet) for nine years when i was younger but i quit for five years. I've missed it dearly and have taken a big interest in pointe especially. Do you think my ankles will still have sufficient strength in them or should i strengthen my ankles for a long period of time again before attempting pointe.

Answer
Hi Quinn. Whether or not you should attempt working in pointe shoes depends on whether or not you are in ballet classes right now. If you are, what does your teacher say?

If you are not in ballet classes now, no, you should not do any pointe work.Dancing ballet in pointe shoes depends on total body strength, including the many and tiny muscles in the sole of the foot.

If you are in ballet classes now, and if you want to add to your study to prepare for pointe work, you can get The Perfect Pointe Book at http://www.theballetstore.com It is a manual that outlines self-assessment, and practice routines for pointe work preparation.

The short answer is, if you are not in ballet classes right now, don't attempt pointe work. It is not worth the risk of a dance injury.

Approached correctly, one day you WILL dance in pointe shoes! All the best, Dianne
