Question I live in Canada and I'm 19. I just started ballet in september and I'm taking my grade 4 exam in May already. The only other dance training I've had is tap for one year. I'm wondering if I should keep taking privates and training as much as possible or if I auditioned for a University what are my chances for getting in? My goals are to perform for a bit and then direct children's musicals around the world as well as choreograph my own ballet.
I'm also wondering if you could recommend any good Universities. I'm willing to travel wherever I need to go, this is my passion and I will do whatever it takes. And one last question is how do I improve turnout?
Thanks
Miranda
Answer Hi Miranda. Do a web search for universities with dance departments and check their audition schedules. Some of them do audition tours as well, usually in January or February.
I couldn't say what your chances of getting are - check the dance departments and the theatre departments, which may have dance in their programs.
I won't recommend any particular program. They are all a little different, and you can select the ones that seem the best for you since you need technical, classical and it sounds like musical theatre training as well. What a grand adventure!
Here is a site of mine devoted to ballet turnout:http://www.squidoo.com/increaseballetturnout/
I can answer questions about ballet positions, ballet movements and ballet technique, pointe shoes and pre pointe exercise, mens training, ballet diet, general health issues related to dance, artistry, performance, modern dance, rehabilitation from injuries, and teaching ballet. I have taught ballet, choreographed, produced and directed dance companies. For any answers related to health questions I will offer my experience, and give references to information, but I also automatically include "see a professional".
