Ballet/Auditions to top dance programs

Question
Hello, my daughter is auditioning for many top programs, especially in New York. To one she was waitlisted even though in the interview they showed very strong interest, in the other she was invited to their summer program (which is highly difficult to get in, on a regular basis) and in the other, nothing.  No feedback  She doesn't really know what to expect.  SHe has been dancing all her life, goes to performing arts school and is a skilled dancer.  Question: what is meant by wanting dancers that they can mold?  And if a program you are applying invites you to their summer program...does that mean anything?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Lil. Being molded - kind of a frightening thought isn't it?

In ballet, a school will want to train (mold)dancers to all have the same look and style in order to give a uniform look to their corps de ballet. A Russian trained ballet dancer will look out of place in The Royal Ballet corps de ballet - and vice versa.

If a major school picks students for the summer, the school may be viewing this as a longer audtion. They like your daughter's dancing, and they want to see how she works and improves, as well as get a feel for her attitude in general. It is certainly a good opportunity for a young ballet dancer to be seen. A 'no feedback' from a school may simply mean that the classes are filled. Or, if that audition team didn't like your daughter's dancing, no matter, she was picked out of hundreds by the others. Urge her not to dwell on it.

Congratulations to her! Let me know if there is anything more I can help you with. All the best,Dianne.
